A warm welcome to the Harwich Transportation, Railway and Shipping Museum
The museum is a Community Interest Company (CIC) operating on a not-for-profit basis for the benefit of the community. The museum is housed in the Harwich Town Station building which were first opened in 1864.The station building has undergone a major transformation; one which will take you back to 1924 and that provides a suitable stage for the many exhibits. The collection is curated by Bob Clow from his own lifetime acquisitions, it consists of a unique and extensive collection of railway memorabilia and includes figures created by an apprentice to Madame Tussauds. Be warned, these life-like manikins have enthralled our visitors and caused some consternation for their accompanying pets. The historically accurate displays are unique to the Harwich branch line and include excellent examples of our rich and diverse railway and shipping history.Toilet and baby changing facilities are also available.
We look forward to seeing you soon …..
…… but you need to know how to get to us.
Arriving by public transport could not be simpler because the Harwich Town railway station is the terminus of the Mayflower line, a branch of the Great Eastern Main Line from London Liverpool Street, and in front of the station building is the bus terminus where journeys from Dovercourt, Manningtree, Colchester and Clacton start and finish. For those visitors travelling privately, we have 30 parking spaces in front of the Museum which is reached from the Harwich to Dovercourt road, the B1352. There is additional street parking available close by.Coach parking on site can be arranged if adequate notice is given. Some of the visitors to the Museum might arrive on foot. Harwich is the finishing point of the 82 mile Essex Way long distance footpath from Epping on the outskirts of London. There is also the E2 European Long distance Path which passes through Harwich on its way to Nice from Galway. For our visitors from further afield, a Stena Line sea ferry arrives in Harwich from the Hook of Holland twicedaily. And, on a more domestic scale, there is also the Harwich Harbour foot passenger ferry service insummer which operates across the River Stour from Felixstowe and Shotley in Suffolk.Harwich is relatively close to five international airports. It is:50 miles from Stansted Airport, 60 miles from Southend Airport, 82 miles from London City Airport, 102 miles from Gatwick Airport and 110 miles from Heathrow Airport

Luggage Label HoldersThis photograph shows a section of the luggage label holders at the station, which may be viewed in the ticket office. By law any case or parcel not accompanied in transit would carry a label showing its destination. This practice existed from the earliest railway days i.e. Eastern Counties Railways, Great Eastern Railways, London North Eastern Railways and only finished in mid British Railway times.
